A Reader in the Library

A Reader in the Library
Help without a price
Malthios struggles to read in secret, embarrassed by how far behind he is. Kamil finds him and offers to teach, asking for no reward or advantage.
A name becomes familiar
Kamil calls him Mal, a casual intimacy he is not used to receiving. Her patience makes learning possible and begins a friendship that differs from the exploitative relationships he expects.
The library becomes the first place where Malthios is not valued only for power. Kamil’s help gives him a reason to imagine that demons might choose loyalty as well as advancement.
Aym Steps In

Aym Steps In
A stranger challenges the strong
Aym attacks older Novices who are threatening Malthios, despite being smaller and badly outnumbered. They defend him because the bullying is wrong, not because he can offer a reward.
A first act of solidarity
Malthios is initially ashamed that he cannot help, then uses his power when Aym is in danger. Kamil, Torq, and Foras join the fight, and the group succeeds through cooperation rather than superior numbers.
The incident gives the Pentagram its emotional foundation. Each member finds a reason to trust the others before any of them can know what that trust will cost.
The Pentagram’s Ascension

The Pentagram’s Ascension
Rank demands a massacre
The five friends are told that they must kill many innocents to ascend to Demon Lord. They carry out the demand and gain wings, mana, and a higher place in demon society.
Doubt survives the ritual
Their transformation brings relief and celebration, but Aym questions why killing is the only path to growth. Kamil agrees that mortals seem to have better ways of living, while Malthios cannot yet believe demons can change.
The friends’ shared doubts reveal that their bond has already widened their moral imagination. Their society’s rules persist, but the Pentagram has begun to question whether those rules deserve loyalty.
Aym’s Last Rescue

Aym’s Last Rescue
The group refuses to abandon Malthios
The Pentagram encounters a Hero and tries to retreat together. Malthios stays behind to hold the enemy, but his companions refuse to leave him to face the danger alone.
A life given for escape
After Aym is struck down, Kamil uses her wind magic to send Malthios out of danger. The Hero kills her as she protects him, while Torq and Foras also die in the fighting.
Malthios survives because of the people he loves, but survival becomes inseparable from the loss of them. Their courage is what he remembers, even when vengeance later narrows what he believes it means.
Memory in the Village

Memory in the Village
Old names return
Ordinary days in Leafel allow Malthios to remember the Pentagram’s teasing, shared meals, and affection. Theo’s presence brings those memories forward even when Malthios had spent years suppressing them.
Grief becomes survivable
Amaya listens as Malthios speaks of Kamil and the others. He begins to acknowledge that missing them need not require continuing the war that followed their deaths.
His friends are not restored, and their loss remains real. But Malthios can now carry their memory as part of a life that includes new relationships and a different purpose.
